Christmas Eve & Christmas Day At KMHC

Christmas Eve: Weeks ago the tenants were asked to make a Christmas wish list of 5 items.  On Christmas Eve I got a knock on my door around 9:30am it was H.O.W. Charles delivering gifts that were donated by anonymous donors outside of  KMHC.  I was glad to see Charles was Santa’s helper for the day.  Charles and I both smiled and wished each other a Merry Christmas.  Aside the fact Ingrid the Grinch doesn’t want the staff to talk to me and the gifts are not from KMHC she has no say in the matter, Charles Jacobs did the right thing.
Later in the day I ran into Catherine who’s the oldest tenant in the building. She & I get along great and she’s such a sweet old gal, she introduced me to her son in law and will be spending the holidays with them.  Holy Moses & I met on the elevator…the poor guy he told me he’s not feeling well but is determined to spend time with friends on the rez. I told him to take it easy and wished each other a Merry Christmas then off he went.  I nearly bumped in the Super as I was getting on the elevator; she grunted something then proceeded on her way. No smiles, no Holiday greeting…nope not from the Super.
Janis the tenant was on her way out with family and little Debbie delivered some food for me. At the moment she has a terrible cold, she’s a tough cookie she had things to do that day and was determined to do them.  Re: Debbie & I, we interact with each other like brother and sister, we both have strong opinions, we argue then months later we’re talking again. :)
I received calls from family and friends and of course on social media wishing me Happy Holidays I prefer “Happy Holidays” since I’m agnostic.

Christmas Day : Today I woke up feeling refreshed I’m not one for getting depressed during the holidays. I opened my gifts, got dressed then attended a turkey dinner then went to a roast beef buffet later. OMG!  Too much food. :)
It's quiet in this building.  Last but not least my friend tenant Deano this man is a good person but naive, an easy target for shady street people. ie: He just dropped by and gave me the bad news, his wallet was lifted all his money was taken for rent, food, bills.  I suggested he file a police report he may not get his money back but at least the cops will be on the lookout for this person and put her behind bars.  I feel bad for my friend but I also gave him shit never, ever carry around large amounts of cash.  Robbed on Christmas day terrible eh?

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

KMHC Friends

For the first time an immediate family member passing has effected me on so many levels. I now know what KMHC tenant little Debbie went through when she lost her son. And when tenant Bernadeen lost her son 9 yrs ago. No parent should ever outlive their child yet it does happen. 😢 A special thanks to the tenants and friends at the KMHC building for the condolence card.

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...
