New Years Day 2013

The holidays was crap at KMHC

You see there are some aging Aboriginal tenants who are not feeling well, some are alone and some get depressed over the holidays.  I feel bad for these folks because this is it for them…the last stop before the retirement home. :(
The KMHC Christmas luncheon was a bust. Many of the regular tenants didn’t come perhaps they had other plans or didn’t think it was worth it.  I notice when the HSC was in the community room she really didn’t blend in with the crowd. She just sat the other end of the room by herself brooding while our group was laughing and enjoying the food we all prepared.  UNH’s staff Franklin, Teresa, Linda and a temp employee (I can’t remember her name) these are the only 4 staff members from head office that attended the luncheon when last year the room was packed.  This year no Santa, no Director to make an inspiring speech, no board members, no Native prayer, no smudge ceremony.  That’s a lot of “No’s for a place that claims to be “Sheltering The Spirit”.  In the end I was glad to see H.O.W. Charles perk up the tenants with a bingo game after the luncheon.
Today I took down my Christmas tree and flashing window light display which by the way everybody in the neighbourhood loved and everything is back to normal. This evening I did get a nice surprise, tenant Spencer supplied food for a New Years Day dinner and a few ladies in the building cooked it.  Tenant Deano delivered a plate full of roast beef with all the fixins, I graciously accepted. A Thank you goes to Spencer and Deano and the ladies.

Recycling program – There has to be a better system I look out the hallway this past week and all I see is two blue bins sitting across from the office over flown with recycling waste. Every time there’s a long weekend this is what we have to look at.  I'm sure there's a city by-law about this.

Spycam – Well Well Well...The HSC is up to her old tricks again by installing more cameras 1 at an obscure area of the basement, another on the first floor and one at the entrance. Just think now she can write up tenants who happen to pick their nose or scratch their ass in the hallway.  Are the tenants that bad she needs to watch their every move!  Gawd! :P

Safety railing - Some time ago this issue was brought up at a tenant meeting, a suggestion to install safety railing in the hallway and bathrooms so tenants who happen to feel weak or have a disability can move around with confidence.  HSC response to this suggestion was "We have no money" for such things.  Meanwhile in 2012 KMHC found $$$ to landscape the front courtyard and install more cameras in the hallway.  It's time for KMHC to get their priorities in order.

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Ladies of KMHC

I & friend Teresa Last week I attended a program host by NWC Hamilton, it was there I met up with six female tenants of KMHC.   It was nice to see the ladies again I was greeted with hugs and smiles.   The program was Holistic teachings by Jane Burning she spoke about the Creator and positive thinking.   I enjoyed the presentation though it was a wee bit long.   During lunch break I had the chance to chat with the KMHC tenants to find out how’s life going at KMHC.   Things haven’t improved most tenants don’t like each other and there’s a lot of negative energy in the building.   I offered a sympathetic ear and didn’t judge as they shared their stories. The big problem with KMHC is tenant Aunt Opie and I’m glad she didn’t attend the NWC program.   You may recall I spoke of her in past blogs, aunt Opie’s negativity spreads throughout KMHC.   She brags about sending false complaint e-mails about tenants and staff to Justin the head direc...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
