Best Christmas Present 2017

My living room window.

Yesterday afternoon KMHC had their general meeting.  I entered the community room and slowly the other tenants came in.  A native elder guest started the meeting with a prayer then an introduction from Ontario Aboriginal Housing acting director Justin Marchand and his colleagues.  I sat beside Hamilton City Hall social housing manager Mr. Adam Sweedland.  I introduced myself as a tenant and author of the Hamilton Native Housing blogsite.  Unfortunately UNH board member Carol Hill couldn’t attend because she locked herself out of her home.  What a great way to start a serious meeting with a little humor. :D
I found out Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services aka OAHS is based in the northern city of Sault Ste. Marie and have other offices and 2,000 homes across the province of Ontario.  Their credentials are impressive they have been around for many years.  OAHS objective is to assist UNH’s with maintenance, repairs and I sense a transitional period until they finally take over management, Justin was vague when I asked the question about the current UNH Acting Director.  Beside that sharing their other plans was all positive, the repairs, working to better communication between staff and tenants.  We were told there are five board members that meet with the UNH Acting director once a month to discuss God only knows what!  :P

Discussion between tenants got a bit heated then Franklin the cultural coordinator stepped in to remind tenants about petty bickering and snide remarks are not acceptable and invited those to see him privately to help with their issues.

Starting within the next few months OAHS maintenance staff will be doing KMHC unit inspections then eventually hire contractors to do the work.  We were told Candlewood (Kenatah Complex) is in need of many repairs that will probably take top priority and I’m all for it. Families are up there.
The current UNH staff will be employed until March 31/18 then OAHS will be reevaluating their job positions.  Personally I hope Teresa and Crystal stick around after the transitional period but all I can do is hope for the best.  Paralegal Ali Naraghi from Hamilton Community Legal Clinic offered his services should tenants need advice yet since receiving the N5 notice from their office I’m skeptical.
As the meeting adjoined I leaned over to the City of Hamilton Social Housing manager Mr. Sweedland and I said, Thank you sir I’ve been waiting a long time for this.  He smiled and said I know. :)

You know what folks!  This is the best Christmas present to receive for the year 2017. Truth be told this is why I created this blogsite back in 7/24/10 to share with the world there are problems at KMHC and we need help.  I’m optimistic a better future for indigenous tenants across the City of Hamilton.

Thank you for reading my blogs.  I love you all & have a Merry Christmas. :)

Clearly my understanding is that Acting Director will not have her position once everything is finalized and I will be happy then as it has been a stressful two years and we all expressed it at our meeting, come January 15 they start to take over, and then March everything comes into place, we will be celebrating did they explain this at your meeting, no more staff yippee we will have Property Management staff instead, once everything is finalized

Too bad Michelle isn't here I can't get in touch with her. I would like to know if the van issue was addressed at the Candlewood meeting. I know a KMHC tenant brought it up at our meeting.

no it wasn't addressed, barely anything there were too many issues, and not sure if Acting Director is leaving completely nothing is finalized

....I did invite the City Hall Spec reporter to the meeting but he never showed up. He did post a Tweet he's off for a few days perhaps The Spec will post an article when the actual transition process begins.

I forgot to mention in my blog post. I also asked Justin will they be working on getting Unity Way and other funding agencies back as supporters. They are important when it comes to events, good programs and holiday functions for tenants at Kenatah Complex, Odrohekta Men’s Residence, Koo Gaa Da Win Housing Complex and families that have residential homes.

Today I tweeted a message to The Spec/City Hall reporter that his presence was missed at the meetings. He was off for a few days and he apologize to the UNH tenants. He did say he will do a follow up on the story.

Thanks Mathew.

Big news! The Hamilton Spectator will publish the article on Dec 27 2017. Watch out for it. :)

This morning I checked the Hamilton Spectator and no article was to be found. I'm feel embarrassed and disappointed. I sent a e-mail to the reporter asking is there a delay or was it cancelled. As soon as I get a reply I'll post an update.

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
