Christmas at KMHC

Post Christmas
Last week UNH arranged for the tenants a bus field trip to Niagara Falls Ontario to see the light show. The plan was to leave at 4pm but there was a delay.  A tenant in a wheelchair had difficulty getting from the Men’s Residence on Kenilworth to KMHC and was late.  By the time the bus embarked around 5 pm it was almost dark, I didn’t go because I had other plans.  The next day the ladies said I should have went, the bus was not full to capacity and the obnoxious male tenant was warned to behave himself.   I was told the only drawback the tenants didn’t get the chance to get off the bus and admire the view.

I suppose the trip would have been nice but I’ve been to Niagara Falls many times in the past.  Plus I wouldn’t have liked the idea of not being able to get off the bus to get some fresh air and stretch my legs.  The bus tour lasted about 3 hours.  Gosh!  Remember Gilligan’s Island!  They went for a 3 hour tour and look what happened to them. :D

On Friday the KMHC tenants were invited to a Christmas dinner hosted by Homeward Bound at the men’s residence building.   UNH gave us taxi slips for 2 round trips to the dinner and back.  I had one set and was ready to go when my neighbor Bernadine cancelled at the last minute.  While standing at the KMHC entrance observing the other tenants trying to call for a taxi I thought do I really want to sit and eat with my least favorite tenants!   My answer was no, I called over Claudia to explain Bernadine and I are cancelling and I’ll return the taxi slips to the office.  I have no regret the weather was stormy plus 30 minutes prior I was interviewed by the Hamilton Spectator about UNH.  I was on a high and didn’t need a turkey dinner to get me into the festive mood.
Sadly for the first time Urban Native Homes Inc. didn’t distribute Christmas gifts to their tenants in 2017. This includes KMHC, Kenatah Complex and the Men’s Residence.  I have empathy for the children, the vulnerable Native Elders and aboriginal males who are battling their demons.  :(

In years past I experience being excluded from UNH management gift giving.  It’s disappointing at first but I got over it, it shows not to rely on anybody but myself.  This year I’m enjoying the Christmas season thanks to friends and acquaintances.  I’m not the type who get depressed over the holidays and I predict 2018 will be full of good changes and opportunities. :)

My Christmas day good deed: aunt Opie lost her keys near the courtyard and she looked frantic. I notice the keys nearby in the snow, without saying a word I pointed them out and kept walking.

Happy New Year!  :D

I received an email reply from the reporter on why the article was not posted today. Here's his explanation.

Hi Tony,

The article was to be published in today’s paper, but the editor held it. This happens from time to time based on what other news there is on any given day. It has not been cancelled. I do hope it is published in Thursday’s paper.

Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks,

Teviah

Its nice that the Reporter sent you the email to explain, you will possibly see other tenants mentioned in this article, I hope it gets published tomorrow, I would love to see the reaction from Staff her at Candlewood on it, we need closure and move on with new management as soon as possible, and still send in complaints to the Board about Staff its important

Hi Tony,

I’ve just been told the article will hold again, so that means you will not see it in Thursday’s paper. I will email you when I know for certain it is running.

Oh no, its sort of a disappointment, lets hope it is in the paper soon, they have a Shredded Truck at the complex today, hmmm interesting

They should put Christine in the shredded truck. LOL

Anyway tonight around 7 pm I decided to send the Spec reporter a add-on to the article. I mentioned none of the tenants received any Christmas gifts from UNH this year and why I'm disappointed with the organization. I hope they use the information.

Good article but completely forgot about Candlewood Complex in this article oh well next time, each area has separate issues and different Councils oh well its still an article

During Teviah's interview he thought I lived at Candelwood and I corrected him. Not all topics I shared with him were in the article and I understand, the paper has to have a certain level of standards. If it were the National Enquirer the article would be alot different. ;)

I know what happened? there are different complexs Mary, Candlewood Drive he identified both tenants in the same area? oh well lets hope there is a follow up, so where are we suppose to make our complaints too? and what happens January 14? are they leaving?

I have never seen so many angry looking staff members as in Mary St they came to visit they should learn to be polite and smile lol lets hope they exit soon

....I agree. Those UNH staff members can show their angry faces when they apply for E.I benefits. Reason for dismissal - I was thrown under the bus by a van diving director who doesn't give a shit and I didn't have the sense to look for a real job. LOL *joke*

Something is suppose to start happening on January 14, can't come to soon for me, but I think they are still here til April 1, so who are we suppose to make our complaints to again, did they mention that in your meeting?

I believe OAHS will start maintenance inspections in January/February and the current staff will be fired March 31/18. I suggest any written complaints be sent the normal way or wait for the maintenance inspectors to show up. Unless it's an emergency I doubt the current UNH staff give a shit since they will soon be out the door.

After many years I received a call for Toronto Native Housing offering a vacancy so I decided to explore my options by attending a viewing of what's available. But first I did a phone interview with acting project manager Paul Feitelberg. He said my personal and financial information checks out fine then we talked about the negative reference I got from Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services. I was asked for my side of the story and I also invited Paul to read this blog site to find out more who I am.  A few days later I called Paul for an update, I was complimented on my blog posts and he could see the love and compassion I have for the Native people on this blog site.  Due to the Hamilton cyber attack it was difficult for Paul get a reference from my current housing provider so with my assistance I helped him get in contact with their office. I received an excellent tenant reference from my housing provider. When I asked about OAHS he said he's going to ignore their negative re...

The Ladies of KMHC

I & friend Teresa Last week I attended a program host by NWC Hamilton, it was there I met up with six female tenants of KMHC.   It was nice to see the ladies again I was greeted with hugs and smiles.   The program was Holistic teachings by Jane Burning she spoke about the Creator and positive thinking.   I enjoyed the presentation though it was a wee bit long.   During lunch break I had the chance to chat with the KMHC tenants to find out how’s life going at KMHC.   Things haven’t improved most tenants don’t like each other and there’s a lot of negative energy in the building.   I offered a sympathetic ear and didn’t judge as they shared their stories. The big problem with KMHC is tenant Aunt Opie and I’m glad she didn’t attend the NWC program.   You may recall I spoke of her in past blogs, aunt Opie’s negativity spreads throughout KMHC.   She brags about sending false complaint e-mails about tenants and staff to Justin the head direc...

Koo Gaa Da Win Manitou

I hope one day we can truly say there is a haven where older natives who experienced homelessness can find a place to call home and have the resources available for the best quality of life in their golden years. Koo Ga Da Win Manitou Housing Complex has a long journey in order to reach that goal. Perhaps more funding is needed or better trained/experienced outreach workers who can relate to tenants concerns and health issues. Programs that would interest all tenants as a whole would be nice. Most important we tenants must try to get along with their neighbours. (as the good book says "Love thy neighbour") I've been here less then a year and I've observed alot, we have a diversity of tenants living in the building from different reservations and walks of life. Some have problems with alcohol, prescription drug addictions, physical disabilities and slight mental disabilities. The one thing we all have in common is our health concerns, from chronic back pain to deadly...
