Welcome Miss Elizabeth

Yesterday KMHC tenants were invited to a “Sharing Circle” introduction in the community room.  Elizabeth Potskin is the new Cultural Resource worker for UNH’s.  My plan was to be a fly on the wall and listen.  Even though I and fellow tenant Joanie arrived late we were still included in the native smudge ritual.  During the presentation Elizabeth came up with some interesting and fun ideas for the tenant elders to participate and she’s very knowledgeable in native traditions.  From native arts & crafts to physical activity the young lady knows her stuff.  I could see the tenant elders took a liking to her. I was impressed with her confidence, likeable personality and humor, I wish her well in her new job position. :)
It’s unlikely I’ll attend many of her programs due to an active lifestyle and involved in other community activities in Hamilton plus tenant Dean is most annoying person at KMHC programs to the level of village idiot.  I smirked when tenant Dave told Dean to stop interrupting while he spoke during the introductions.  Whenever Dean’s tectonic plate in his head begins to shift I assume he sees the world upside-down. :D
I finally had the opportunity to chat on a social level with new tenant Bernadina she’s my next door neighbor.  What a delight she is in conversation and laughs.  :)
Honorable mention goes to tenants who attended the presentation – Robby the Robot, Gladys Kravitz, Super Dave, Salty Sandy, Linda Loveless, Uncle Albert and last but not least Joan of Arc.  :)

Now for the critique – Traditionally when Native organizations in the city have a presentation or a meeting they first offer food and refreshments to their guests/tenants then move on to business.  UNH’s use to do it but yesterday I notice it changed, staff lay out wrapped snack platters and sealed refreshments on the table and tenants are not invited to eat until after the presentation.  Meanwhile lets look at the hungry native elders staring at the food it’s only been two hours. :P  I find it interesting HOW Lynda Jones never made an appearance at the community room and when cabinets and drawers needed to be open she sent the administration staff in with the keys.  Here’s the big question…why is she here!   Come on UNH’s board members it’s time to vote.

Other news!  A big “Thumbs up” to the tenant ladies who tirelessly cooked a feast in honor and memory of those who passed on to the other side.  Tenants and UNH’s staff were included to a plate of cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, roast beef and veggies all cooked to perfection.  Personally it’s a shame the ladies were not allowed/invited to use the community room to distribute the food.  It would have been icing on the cake if we sat together as a group, enjoy the feast and speak fondly of the tenants who left this world.

I had a sense Miss Elizabeth wouldn't last at UNH's. I heard she was suspended from her job. Apparently during the suspension she found another job and moved on. Good for her. Gosh! The last time I saw her was last month during the early evening while riding my SoBi bike passing pier 4. She didn't notice me, I should have stopped to say hello.

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
