I’m happy to announce a select group of tenants at KMHC has helped Miss Judy adjust being back home. Last weekend I traveled to a east end pharmacy to fetch her pain medication then the next day I traveled to Limeridge Mall to sort out her cable bill. But I am walking on a fine wire meaning I don’t want Judy to always rely on me to do things for her. Judy is very sensitive so in a subtle way I mentioned I would like to see her up and about being active that’s the key to longevity. I think she understood.
Tenant Albert is a soft spoken man and relatively new to
KMHC. I was impressed how he decorated
his rental unit and he’s considerate to the other Native elders (except when he’s
drinking) At first Albert hung around
tenant Dean which is not a good thing but now I think he’s found his own way. After
my recommendation Albert decided to join the downtown YMCA. Health and fitness is the way to go buddy. :)
On March 8 2017 I attended a community action plan session
hosted by Hamilton Regional Indian Centre (HRIC) at HPL’s Hamilton room. This year was different I thought we would be
sitting around a large table sharing ideas and recommendations. This time we were arranged in groups I had no
idea who the other participants were until later. To my surprise our group included an associate from the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton, a City Hall aboriginal employee
researching native issues in Hamilton, a single mother, two McMaster university
female students and a fellow tenant. I
didn’t say much and was elated my fellow tenant spoke out in regard to Urban Native
Homes Inc. ie: their flaws and what
needs to be improved. Trust me when I
say the professionals were taking notes. Also
the single mother her knowledge on social issues was impressive. After the housing issue discussion was over I
decided to leave but my fellow tenant stayed with the group. I asked the facilitator if I could take a few
leftover sandwiches for home and she happily obliged. Great food thanks HRIC. :)
Interesting things happened yesterday. First Hamilton Police Services called for a building lock down
over a fake grenade. Sheesh! When the office staff closed for the day they forgot to close and lock the community room door, 30 minutes later the motion sensors tripped and the alarm went off. It’s no
big deal I mean there are no priceless antiques or diamonds and sapphires
displayed in the community room. I
assume the alarm system was installed for insurance purposes. I don’t blame the office staff, honest mistakes
happen from time to time even in the land of Urban Natives Homes Inc. I assisted Brenda the security tenant and the
cops in correcting the problem. Ta-Da!
I recall one night years ago I notice the light was on in the community room and I thought the cleaner Al Loft was still here. I knocked on the door and no answer I then turned the knob and to my surprise the door opened and the alarm went off. Holeee Shit! Running up and down the hallway I shouted….What do I do…What do I do! I then called Al the cleaner on the phone and wouldn’t you know it he forgot to lock the community room. Eventually the cops came to check the perimeter and the cleaner can back to the building to lock the door. All went well but I’m sure the cleaner got shit the next morning from HSC Ingrid Nosel for the fuck up.
