Celebration Of Life

Native performers group pix.

Yesterday was hectic (Sunday) first off I did an errand for tenant Miss Judy then I showered up and headed over to Gage Park to check out the Aboriginal Pow Wow event.  I was greeted with handshakes and hugs from the people who know me as I toured the grounds.  Kudos to the young native dancers dressed in full outfits. :)  Walking by the UNH’s tent I glanced at the overpriced food menu and got a sneer look from Ingrid Nosel and that’s ok.  It was a pleasure to watch her all sweaty and looking haggard in the 35 degree heat and humidity.  I call it penance for giving birth to criminals. :D  I didn’t hang around Gage Park very long, it was very humid plus I had another event to attend.  What a great Father’s Day present to greet my son at Gage Park doing what he does best…working.

While traveling to my next stop I walked by the UNH’s "money pit" Kennilworth Ave. building.  Holy Shite!  I had a good look around the perimeter of the unfinished building.  At the entrance I had to snicker at the step by step instructions on how to enter the building.  Jeezus!  Visitors and guests can't be that stupid. :P

Celebration Of Life.  I arrived at a family and friends gathering in memory of the late Janice Card (Montour) held at a Legion banquet hall on Barton Street.  I was late and missed the ceremony but that didn’t matter her sisters greeted me and I was invited to help myself to the buffet.  Oh My Gosh!  The food was delicious and I ate in air conditioned comfort.  There was a huge crowd of people who I didn’t know soon after the family came over to talk to me.  Janice was a fellow tenant and friend.  The sisters were surprised when I shared the story that I once asked Janice to be my date to a play presented at Theatre Aquarius.  Later as I was about to leave the family offered me a huge container of leftover sandwiches which I accepted, I said I will share it with my fellow tenants who couldn’t attend.  Soon after while riding the bus for home I had time to think.  Janice Card (Montour) was loved by many people and by signing the condolence book it gave me the chance to say goodbye to a wonderful woman.  I didn’t feel sadness I felt content and I know she’s in a place free of pain and with the Creator.

With the family’s permission I took a few pix.

Hello readers. A friend mentioned to me there is a glitch with my blog links. I reviewed his complaint then proceeded to check the template, gadgets and codes and found out I downloaded a wrong size image which made the links go screwy. No that's not the technical term. Anyway I figured it out and corrected the problem. We are good to go. :)

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
