Tony To The Rescue Pt. 2

We’re having a big snowstorm in the land of Canada and where else would I be but stuck in my man cave.  Correction since this is a Native housing blog I’ll use the term ‘Teepee’. :D  Anyway with the passing of a fellow tenant the mood in the building is somber and quiet and rightly so. Then last night something happened, my next door neighbor Deloris had another smoke alarm scare.  In one of my previous blogs dated August 24, 2011 I wrote a story how poor Deloris tripped the smoke alarm and I came to her rescue.  Here’s the sequel.
Last night while on the computer I could hear a smoke alarm sound it came from Deloris’s unit, just as I was getting ready to check on her, she came running to my door totally scared and confused.  I then took control of the situation her unit was filled with smoke.  I checked the stove area and sure enough she must have fallen asleep while making something to eat. The poor woman was making toast in the oven and it was in flames. I turned the oven off, put the stove fan on high to get rid of the smoke in the room thus it would automatically shut off the smoke alarm siren. This wasn’t as dangerous as the previous mishap the oven could have contained the fire since it was only two pieces of toast. I emptied the charred remains of toast in the garbage bin and assured Deloris everything is fine then I left.  I care about Deloris she’s a victim of a car accident which left her impaired and vulnerable and requires special attention.
Hey folks I just received a lovely handmade Christmas card from Deloris delivered under my door.  :)

Memo to UNH’s/KMHC staff and HSC:  As a Christmas gift I have a suggestion buy Deloris a pop up toaster so this won’t happen again.  And for Criss Sakes!  Since she’s been living here the woman is sleeping on the cold hard floor. You have the resources offer to get her a bed!
I have a lot more to say but I’ll save it for 2014.

After this mishap I posted the incident on my FB group "The X Generation Group". I was amazed at the outpouring of support I received from my members. One man in Toronto suggested a collection from "X" members to help Delores buy a bed. The response to his suggestion was amazing but I thought it would be best to ask permission from Deloris first. She declined the offer and I think she felt embarrassed. The "X" Generation Group" has 180 members from all over the world that share stories about their lives. The generosity from the group members during the holidays was amazing. They don't even know Deloris yet they wanted to help. I thanked all those who offered to send $$ so Deloris can have a bed but I had to decline.

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
