KMHC Christmas Luncheon 2013

Yesterday entering the community room I looked around and found a good seat near the dessert table. Tenants Judy, Sandra, Dave and his sister Sue plus we had a special guest “Stan” at our table. The highlight for me was listening to his view on the bureaucrats in the native community.
We started off with tenant Catherine saying grace and a lovely prayer then the people lined up at the buffet table. During this time the KMHC staff were totally unaware tenant Linda was upset.  She was sitting by herself at the other end of the room practically in tears. Empathy for others is something I’m good at so I walked over to comfort the woman. She appreciated my concern.
The KMHC staff were also servers at the buffet table and I got gratification seeing Ingrid Nosel the HSC aka the cop caller finally doing some work around here. :P
Fellow tenants – I notice we have a collage of native tenants at KMHC.  Some are humorous, strange, weird, shy, quiet, outspoken, sensitive while a few are tough as nails. Yesterday we all got together to celebrate the holidays as one. :)
Urban Native Homes staff – What a great bunch of people with the exception of the Director. She didn’t say a word to me and avoided eye contact, whatever is stuck up her ass…it’s her problem not mine.  The maintenance crew joined the luncheon, I was glad to see young Luke Johns (the cleaner) was finally invited to the luncheon, for along time he was excluded.  The office staff was cheerful and friendly and special thanks to Clinton Powless he brought a large container of Tim Hortons ready made coffee, nectar from the Gods.
Santa Claus- This jolly olde fellow in a red suit showed up cracking jokes and wishing everybody a Merry Christmas unfortunately he wasn’t bearing gifts. (Talk about an awkward moment)  Seems UNH’s doesn’t know the meaning of a “plan”.  The organization is supposed to purchase the gift cards before hosting a luncheon. Doh!  Anyway Santa came up with a excellent excuse for the disappointed tenants. His elves got delayed in traffic and the gift cards will be delivered later in the day.
Shocking guest award goes to former tenant Marion. The HSC explained Marion was at the luncheon because Miss Norma passed away. I thought that was totally inappropriate and in bad taste. KMHC should have invited an immediate family member or Norma’s male companion he did her laundry and cooking.
There was bingo later but I didn’t stick around after dessert I left the function.  Thanks to tenant Dave & his sister Sue for the desserts…awesome job. I had a good time. I would rate the luncheon 8 out of 10 which is better then last year, it was the shits.  Honorable mention goes to Howie, little Debbie, Brenda and the other tenants who didn’t make it to the luncheon.

Merry Christmas!

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
