Tenant Meeting July 23, 2013

After the big storm we had over the weekend I decided to do my usual volunteer community work by washing the windows for the tenants on my floor including my own pad.  KMHC don’t wash windows.

On to the tenant meeting: it was uneventful as usual with one exception we were introduced to the new Superintendent and his wife, they seem like a nice couple. Poor Francois I suspect he's not use to public speaking "he was breaking out in a sweat" :)
On the agenda was the problem the building has with tenants and pets. The HSC made it clear repeated complaints to pet owners will be handed a N5 notice and face eviction. What crossed my mind when I heard this was total disappointment.  What the HSC should have done during the screening/interview process of new applicants is lay down the rules involving pets and their owners before signing the lease. Perhaps then she wouldn’t have to utter threats of eviction to the elder tenants.
There was a pissing contest going on during the meeting which I found amusing, goes to show tenants don’t always get along.  I was impressed with new tenant Judy she expressed her hopes when she arrived at KMHC and disappointed they did not reach her expectations, she's very wise and good at voicing her opinion and concerns.  She earned my respect.
There was a discussion on transportation. One thing that caught my attention, tenants who use this service can book a time but there is no guarantee the ride will be available. So how are the senior tenants suppose to get to their appointments....by paddling a canoe! :P   Hmm, perhaps if the transportation driver can drag herself away from the security cameras & sucking up to the HSC maybe she can fulfill her duties.
Linda the temp driver and receptionist at head office is leaving UNH’s. Personally I liked her she has a zesty personality however I did have a problem when I saw her & her boyfriend smoking dope at the last UNH’s picnic at Gage Park. There’s a time and place for everything.
At the meeting H.O.W Linda brought up the notice that was posted telling fellow tenants not to congregate in front of the building, the notice caused a lot of stink among the tenants but this time I have to agree with KMHC. There’s not much in regard to privacy with all the cameras pointing at every direction in the building but let’s not have a live audience standing around when a guest arrives.
The summer is not half over and shit has already hit the fan at KMHC. :D

See ya next time.

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

The Passing of Dean King

There's not many original KMHC tenants left that I know, last week I got word tenant Dean King passed away, we were not related and I remember when he moved in the building we got along well, we hung out often and he shared stories about his life and family. Eventually I notice he wasn't the sharpest pencil in the drawer and I started drifting away thus ended our friendship. Dean didn't have the usual addictions most male aboriginals endure he didn't drink or do drugs the problem was his mental state which I believe began after an auto accident years before.  After I moved out of KMHC I'd often see him standing in line at the food bank in Gore Park in downtown Hamilton or hanging out with street friend Galina in Jackson Square food court. He didn't have many friends and other KMHC tenants just tolerated and accepted his strange behavior. He'd walk the streets looking disheveled and lost.  When I received the news Dean died I didn't feel sad I felt surpri...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP
