CCTV & Voyeurism.....

........There’s a fine line between these two words.  Koo Gaa Da Win Manitou Housing Complex claim the surveillance cameras are for tenant security and protection and I have to ask “from what?”  Surveillance means monitoring the behavior of others usually for the purpose of influencing, managing, controlling or protecting, surveillance is therefore an ambiguous practice, sometimes creating positive effects, at other times negative.  As long as I've been a tenant in this building I've never heard of a break and enter or a tenant being physically attacked or robbed.  IMO Koo Gaa Da Win Manitou staff use it to spy and to keep tabs on the tenants and their guests then write up petty reports on any minor infraction, they actually have a person on the payroll who watch the monitors which is a waste of time, this activity is not illegal but it is sleazy & creepy.  Being one of the first employees to work at ADT Security Systems automated station in Toronto I know a lot about building security and CCTV.  I’m at ease with cameras…what I’m concerned about is how they are used.
This building has 24 units and with the staff that makes about 30 individuals in the building during the day.  That's not much traffic that it requires two cameras on 3 floors, 1 at the main floor elevator and more around the building perimeter and an alarm system for the office and community room. Mind you I'm aware the alarm system is for insurance reasons and there is a fire annunciator panel at the entrance which is probably linked to a monitoring station, like I said I know the business.
Urban Native Homes Inc. try to remember Koo Gaa Da Win Manitou Housing Complex is a residence for older Natives, it is not a jail for criminals or a half-way house for parolees.  Mind you, the way things are around here lately it could pass for a Loony Bin.

It's been almost two years since I wrote this blog and more cameras have been installed @ KMHC. I have a suggestion instead of wasting money on cameras why not install a electric chain linked fence around the building perimeter complete with razer wire and have a heavy armed guard posted at the entrance who will shoot first and ask questions later. :P Readers ask yourself is KMHC a residence or detention complex. I'm firmly convinced CCTV surveillance in the KMHC is to monitor the tenants as they go about their peaceful daily lives. It's annoying to say the least. Oh did I mention they also have an active motion detector in the laundry room. :P

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee.   You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case.   March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time.   Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job.  Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic.   Check your search engine it states this building location is Urban Native Homes head office yet that is not correct.  There is no real head office, the organization has s...

Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go.  I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP

The Ladies of KMHC

I & friend Teresa Last week I attended a program host by NWC Hamilton, it was there I met up with six female tenants of KMHC.   It was nice to see the ladies again I was greeted with hugs and smiles.   The program was Holistic teachings by Jane Burning she spoke about the Creator and positive thinking.   I enjoyed the presentation though it was a wee bit long.   During lunch break I had the chance to chat with the KMHC tenants to find out how’s life going at KMHC.   Things haven’t improved most tenants don’t like each other and there’s a lot of negative energy in the building.   I offered a sympathetic ear and didn’t judge as they shared their stories. The big problem with KMHC is tenant Aunt Opie and I’m glad she didn’t attend the NWC program.   You may recall I spoke of her in past blogs, aunt Opie’s negativity spreads throughout KMHC.   She brags about sending false complaint e-mails about tenants and staff to Justin the head direc...
