Housing Provider Accountability

For nearly 3 years I've been instructed to submit in writing all tenant inquiries to Urban Native Homes Inc. Administration Dept yet no staff employee was assigned to handle my tenant file.   The problem with one way communication, no phones calls, no e-mail correspondence UNH will only accept mail or Fax.   With the advanced communication technology of today Fax and snail-mail are almost obsolete plus I don’t like not being able to speak to a UNH representative aka a real human being.   There are many times when I didn’t get a reply back from the UNH Administration Dept.   Two examples when I had a problem with an oversize fridge and during the 2017 rent review process I had important tenant related questions.   When I asked receptionist Mellissa she said I do not have an assigned H.O.W. and once again I’m to send a request to UNH Administration Dept.   After waiting a few weeks and receiving no reply I went to Hamilton legal Clinic for advice.   I...

Aggression & Paranoia

Last Thursday at 12 noon I was having a pleasant chat with fellow tenant Robert about Thanksgiving holiday dinners and current events at the front of the building.   Suddenly tenant Dean King exits the building in a wild rage claiming we are talking about him.   At first I tried to assure him that is not so but he wouldn’t listen and moved on to verbal insults and aggressive posturing.   I’ve gone through this before with him and I had enough.   We got into a verbal sparring match while I stood in a defensive position.   Soon there was silence then he starts a crazed laughter, turns around continues his insults and walks away.   This was recorded on security surveillance and I would like to see the footage.   Later I wrote up an incident report then went to H.P.S. central station for advice.   The officer on desk read my report and gave me a information card for COAST a mental health crisis hotline perhaps they can send a counselor t...

Funding & Staff Behavior

Recently I read a report from the mayor the two Hamilton Indigenous housing providers will get $10 million from the city these funds are for repairs and maintenance and upgrades.   The rivalry is apparent and will be good to see Urban Native Homes Inc. and Sacajewea Non-Profit Housing battle over who will get most funding.   Now is the time for UNH tenants to submit their request in writing.   KMHC units do need an upgrade ie: no bathroom and kitchen back splash tiles were ever installed, cupboards were never painted.   UNH really went for the “cheap” back in the beginning.   A fresh coat of paint for some units and replace the flooring.   Improve the outdated intercom system I can’t tell you how many times the system broke down in the past year.   During the evening I see insects that look like beetles crawling around the KMHC entrance stairs and hallways and nothing is done about it. From my observation the KMHC office upgrades get priority new o...
