My Easter Week

Easter season is the holiest of holidays plus my youngest son was born on Easter so it’s a special time for me.   On April 10, 2017 “Homeward Bound” located at the money pit building on Kenilworth Ave hosted a Native Easter dinner and for the first time I decided to attend.   We arrived a bit early and seeing Yvonne Maracle working hard on the dinner preparation and still took the time to greet us was exceptional.   Our group then waited outside which gave me the opportunity to look around the building perimeter.   What was written in the Hamilton Spectator about the building is accurate it's a total mess.   Anyway the dinner served buffet style was delicious filled with ham, turkey and all the fixins.   The native guests and staff in attendance couldn’t be any more friendly and sociable at the gathering.   At the end I approached the hostess Yvonne Maracle and thanked her for the feast and the leftover takeout tray.  :) https://tinyurl.com/kyw...

Life Before Death

My ticket Last week I attended a free event hosted by Hamilton Health Sciences at Lincoln Alexander Centre in downtown Hamilton.   As I entered the centre I was greeted by friendly door staff and directed to the ticket booth, the venue reminds me when I worked at a banquet centre.   There was no reserved seating so I claimed the first seat on the right aisle, 3rd row from the front.   Later I decided to get a drink at the bar before the event starts…ice cold bottled water for me please. https://tinyurl.com/lyuvqt5 Dr. B. J. Miller, MD a charismatic speaker who took charge of the stage filled with humor and medical knowledge.   The theme was ‘Life Before Death’ you may think what a morbid, gloomy subject but no it wasn’t the information shared by Dr. Miller and the panel on hospice and palliative care was very informative.   I’ve often wondered when I approach near the end of my life what will it be like!   Will I be a burden to my family!   Wi...

Moving Day Anniversary

It’s been one year since Urban Native Home Inc. moved their head office.   Yes indeed from a spacious building on Albert Street to the cramp basement level of KMHC.   I thought will UNH’s office staff and residence get along!   The staff soon learn Native elders don’t take it lightly when invaders take over their residential building.   There were a few creases to be ironed out i.e.   The noise from the office side door opening and closing during the day, loud conversation in the hallway and my least personal favorite staff parking their vehicles in front of my window.   It could be debated at the landlord and tenant tribunal is staff “Interfering with the tenant’s enjoyment of rental unit” or do they have the right to park in a laneway that was designed for shipping and receiving raw materials.   You can still see the outline of a loading bay that’s been long ago removed.   Many years ago KMHC was originally a manufacturing building; onlookers c...
