Highs and Lows

Since my last post it’s been boring and mundane around the KMHC building then last week while leaving my unit I saw former KMHC superintendent Jan Porter in the hallway.  With exclamation I smiled and I said Hey Jan what a nice surprise seeing you! :)  She was wearing a blue uniform which reminds me of a paramedic.  She works for another company now and I assume she was here as a contractor or doing an inspection.  Anyway I had to give her a big hug then I was on my way.  Since she was standing at the office door I should have whispered in her ear “the place has gone to shit since you left” but I’m sure she noticed the decline. :P  Back then the woman worked hard keeping KMHC in ship-shape and today it looks like the ship has sunk.  I’m still waiting for a response to a maintenance work order I submitted in December 2016.

Other news - Tenant Sue had passed away over the weekend, she lived in a unit down the hall from me and once in a while we would see each other in the hallway and have a nice chat.  I was saddened when I heard the news so today after I attended a hockey game at First Ontario Place I decided to drop by her brother David’s unit (who lives on the 3rd floor) to offer my condolences.  I greeted David with a hug and he invited me in for a coffee.  I sat with him for about an hour and listened while he shared the sad news of his sister’s passing.  I said to David what I admired the most about Sue was her feistiness and sarcasm. :)  She reminds me of legendary Rock singer Grace Slick as she looks today.  David said a few years ago when they were playing music in his apt there’s a song Sue liked and would like it played at her funeral. The title of the song is “Last Waltz” I immediately thought Englbert Humperdink.  David said no the song is sung by country singer Rodney Crowell so David asked to play the song for me since I’ve never heard the version.  He found the track on his Windows Media player then we were silent as the song played when the song was over David has tears in his eyes and his voice cracked with emotion.  I smiled and said the song would be perfect at her funeral.  Soon after I got up and gave David a hug before I left.  The family are band members of The New Credit Of The Mississauga's First Nation, this weekend Sue Pearson will be buried at Six Nations reservation alongside her mother.  For those KMHC tenants who don’t have transportation it would be nice if Urban Native Homes Inc. offer a ride for those (including me) who wish to pay their respects and say goodbye to Sue.

Update- Upon hearing the passing of Howard Moses I decided to drop by tenant David’s unit in regard to his late sister Sue. Lo & Behold! There she is sitting on the counter in a dark shaped urn and looking quite stunning. I touched it and said RIP Sue. According to David the family will not be having a funeral service instead Sue will be quietly buried in a few weeks. David was nice enough to offer me a memento from his sister’s unit. It’s a refrigerator magnet frame with a very interesting caption and image. ;)

Wigwamin Terrace

After many years I received a call for Toronto Native Housing offering a vacancy so I decided to explore my options by attending a viewing of what's available. But first I did a phone interview with acting project manager Paul Feitelberg. He said my personal and financial information checks out fine then we talked about the negative reference I got from Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services. I was asked for my side of the story and I also invited Paul to read this blog site to find out more who I am.  A few days later I called Paul for an update, I was complimented on my blog posts and he could see the love and compassion I have for the Native people on this blog site.  Due to the Hamilton cyber attack it was difficult for Paul get a reference from my current housing provider so with my assistance I helped him get in contact with their office. I received an excellent tenant reference from my housing provider. When I asked about OAHS he said he's going to ignore their negative re...

The Ladies of KMHC

I & friend Teresa Last week I attended a program host by NWC Hamilton, it was there I met up with six female tenants of KMHC.   It was nice to see the ladies again I was greeted with hugs and smiles.   The program was Holistic teachings by Jane Burning she spoke about the Creator and positive thinking.   I enjoyed the presentation though it was a wee bit long.   During lunch break I had the chance to chat with the KMHC tenants to find out how’s life going at KMHC.   Things haven’t improved most tenants don’t like each other and there’s a lot of negative energy in the building.   I offered a sympathetic ear and didn’t judge as they shared their stories. The big problem with KMHC is tenant Aunt Opie and I’m glad she didn’t attend the NWC program.   You may recall I spoke of her in past blogs, aunt Opie’s negativity spreads throughout KMHC.   She brags about sending false complaint e-mails about tenants and staff to Justin the head direc...

Koo Gaa Da Win Manitou

I hope one day we can truly say there is a haven where older natives who experienced homelessness can find a place to call home and have the resources available for the best quality of life in their golden years. Koo Ga Da Win Manitou Housing Complex has a long journey in order to reach that goal. Perhaps more funding is needed or better trained/experienced outreach workers who can relate to tenants concerns and health issues. Programs that would interest all tenants as a whole would be nice. Most important we tenants must try to get along with their neighbours. (as the good book says "Love thy neighbour") I've been here less then a year and I've observed alot, we have a diversity of tenants living in the building from different reservations and walks of life. Some have problems with alcohol, prescription drug addictions, physical disabilities and slight mental disabilities. The one thing we all have in common is our health concerns, from chronic back pain to deadly...
