The KMHC Building

Some of you readers are wondering what this place looks like inside. The previous owners ran a printing shop and over the years I would pass by around 4 pm and see the employees coming out from the basement and I think the offices were on the second floor. I’m a fan of old building architecture what caught my eye about this place is the stone engraved name at the top of the entrance.

Unfortunately there is no lobby or foyer in this joint once you walk in you’re at the stairway so there’s no real space for tenants to sit & relax especially during the cold weather season. I mentioned this building is old and believe me it has aches and pains ie: roof leaking, basement flooding, pipes bursting and I notice some cracks and concrete holes around the old building exterior. Even though the super is "strange" I will admit she does an adequate job in maintenance. My apt/unit has a pillar in the middle of the room so I don’t think the building will collapse on me, mind you I’m sure the olde gal in the office would love to see it happen. :)

Whoever designed the units must have had a very low budget to work with. The walls are fragile and hollow (drywall), cheap floor covering, heating unit is obsolete plus the bathroom has no baseboard heater and get this readers for two years I haven’t had a bath. LOL ....Yeah-Yeah, I know what you’re thinking but it is true, there is no bathtub in any units just a tiny acrylic shower stall.

The amusing thing about this odd looking building is when people walk by and ask if this is a jail or part of the C.S. aka Central Police Station. So the next time you walk by and stare at this place.. go ahead, point and Laugh Out Loud.....I don't mind. :)

Poor Working Environment

My unit is located near the KMHC office, along with a friendly wave or hello I see the junior staff going about their business in a cheerful manner with the exception of one employee. You would think KMHC has a pleasant working environment but that is not the case. March 2016 is when Urban Native Homes head office was forced to move from their former spacious location to the cramp basement level of KMHC. There were approx. 8-10 staff members at the time. Then the Urban Native Homes financial scandal broke out and soon after the current UNH acting director’s illicit past became public knowledge, everyone was worried will they have a job. Fearful meetings going on in the community room, the rumor mill was in full rotation while I just stood back and observed the panic. Sandy Holland

On February 27th 2025 I heard the passing of tenant Elder Sandy Holland. I knew she was in bad health and said to her friend she's ready to go. I met her years ago when she moved to KMHC she seem a bit daffy yet in a nice way, never spoke mean about others but had strong opinions about UNH staff. We would meet at UNH dinner functions and meetings and always offered me hug. She never got personal sharing her life stories with me which I can respect. RIP

The Ladies of KMHC

I & friend Teresa Last week I attended a program host by NWC Hamilton, it was there I met up with six female tenants of KMHC. It was nice to see the ladies again I was greeted with hugs and smiles. The program was Holistic teachings by Jane Burning she spoke about the Creator and positive thinking. I enjoyed the presentation though it was a wee bit long. During lunch break I had the chance to chat with the KMHC tenants to find out how’s life going at KMHC. Things haven’t improved most tenants don’t like each other and there’s a lot of negative energy in the building. I offered a sympathetic ear and didn’t judge as they shared their stories. The big problem with KMHC is tenant Aunt Opie and I’m glad she didn’t attend the NWC program. You may recall I spoke of her in past blogs, aunt Opie’s negativity spreads throughout KMHC.
